MCTE Fall Workshop 2023:
Why Kids Hate Grammar and What We Can Do About It
with Travis Leech
Why does the simple utterance of the word grammar in our classrooms cause students to cringe? Travis Leech, co-author or Patterns of Power for Adolescent Writers and High School Writers, was once such a student. He has become an educator who is passionate about the invitational Patterns of Power process for grammar instruction. Our day of learning will begin with a brief examination of how teachers encountered grammar as students. This will be followed by discovering shifting learning anchors around grammar. We will then experience the student-friendly process for making kids fall in love with—or at least use—grammar with purpose and craft. We will then explore resources to support implementation of this grammar process into classroom practice. The entire day will be highly interactive, with participants reading, writing, and discussing often about not only the Patterns of Power process but also ways to fit this process into their tightly-packed classroom schedules. --Program Schedule--
